Cage Liners
Ferret Nation & Critter Nation Cage Liners Kit
Available in blue & purple OR designer diamond print Liner kit includes: 2 shelf covers, 3 ramp covers, 1 top pan cover and 1 bottom pan cover All covers are machine washable and dry-able Note: This liner kit is great, but these liners do not have an absorbent layer. You will need to use an old towel or some kind of absorbent fabric under these liners. What kind of cage liners does Curious Critters Rattery use?
We started out using the liners shown above with towels under them. Eventually, we began sewing our own cage liner "blankets" from 2 pieces of no-pill fleece and 1 piece of U-Haul packing blanket in the middle for absorbancy. If you are interested in sewing your own, you can easily find directions on Youtube and Google searches. What if I can't sew or don't have time to make my own liners? You have options! The cage liner sets shown above are a great option, just put a bath towel under each cover. If you don't want to do that, you can check Etsy and eBay for "Ferret Nation" or "Critter Nation" cage liner sets. Sometimes you can even find someone local who sew cage liners and other cage furniture on the Facebook marketplace or local sale groups. Can I use disposable "Pee Pads" in my rats' cage or under those liners? No! ALL disposable products contain all sorts of chemicals and can be toxic or deadly to your curious rats. Remember to never use anything in, under or near your rats' cage that could be bad for them if they chew on it. Rats explore with their mouths so please only put chew-safe materials in your pets cage. Will my rats chew on the cage liners? Maybe! Rats do have an instinct to chew things and make nests. You can offer fabric scraps to encourage them to make nests out of scraps and pieces rather than chewing up their cage mats. You should also be giving your rats lots of toys and rat-safe objects to chew on and play with to keep them busy. Most rats will eventually nibble on the liners at some point so your liners will not last forever. How often you need to repair or replace your cage liners will depend on your rats. |
Bedding
Carefresh Bedding - Natural
Note: This is the bedding we use in our maternity and nursing cages. This is the only bedding we recommend.
Why don't we recommend any kind of wood shavings or wood pellets?
Pine and ceder wood shavings have been proven to be harmful to the health of rodents and should never be used for rats. While aspen shavings are likely safe to use, we have found that some of our rats have a respiratory and/or skin reactions to aspen, therefore we do not recommend any wood shaving bedding or litter. Corncob, walnut shell, clay, cat litters and any product containing baking soda should not be used for rats. Can I use other variations and colors of Carefresh bedding? Carefresh offers bedding that combines wood shavings and paper bedding and we do not recommend ANY wood shavings product. While we prefer the natural/un-dyed bedding, you could use the white or colored Carefresh bedding if you would like to. |
Litter Pan Litter
OXBOW Eco-straw Small Animal Litter
Note: This is what we use in our rats' litter pans. This is the only litter product we recommend. Can I use something different in my rats' litter pan?
Maybe. First, you'll need to make sure the litter you want to use is completely rat-safe, even if the litter is under a grate. Rats are extremely curious and clever so you should never assume that they will not get to and try to eat anything in their cage - even if it is under a floor or litter pan grate. What do I need to avoid when looking for a litter for my rats? You should avoid all products that contain any of these:
